Ron Boise (1932-66), sculptor. Born in Colorado, his sculpture, assembled from cut and welded parts of junked automobiles found in Death Valley, interpreted the human figure with a heroic, if battered, monumentality. His most celebrated work was a series of small pieces that portrayed, largely in terms of abstract rhythms and movement, various sexual positions illustrated in the Kama Sutra: exhibited in 1964 at the Vorpal Gallery, then located in an alleyway behind the Vesuvio Cafe in North Beach, they became a cause celebre when the show was closed by police, and Muldoon Elder, the gallery's proprietor was arrested for obscenity (he was acquitted after a jury trial). p. 262.
