EDITOR'S PROLOGUE
This Anthology reflects the CCM passing scene, which included faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as invited guests who perform in concerts or present lecture/demonstrations sponsored by the Center for Contemporary Music. This is the scene I saw daily during my two years as a grad student at CCM. My introduction was provided by director Robert Ashley on my first day at Mills. "What we have here is a summer camp for composers," he said. Since then I've said the CCM offered me the only adult education I've ever received. "Music Worker's Camp" is perhaps a better description.
BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF FIRE was open to contribution from all the different groups who contributed to life at the Center. The contributors list, drawn from past concert programs, alumnae lists, and so on, was posted for about a month at the Center and additional names were added by consensus. Each person on this final list was asked for other names, and offered one to four pages in the Anthology. The works submitted need not have been composed or performed at the Center. Expense limited the format to black and white materials, and photographs were paid for by the individual artists themselves.
BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF FIRE is not a complete picture of CCM. It is not all-inclusive. But it does present the range of diversity and the creativity which passes through the CCM hallway.
I would like to thank: Robert Ashley David Behrman Nick Bertoni Jack Briece Dennis Dieterich Bill Farley Rich Gold Mimi Johnson Pat Kelley Robin Kirck Marina LaPalma Merry Luskin Margaret Lyon Terry Riley Bob Sheff Michael Sheridan and Vera Fasso and Val Lounkin of the Mills College Stenographic Bureau without whose help this project would have been unthinkable.
