FEVER (Idle Talk), (1982), is representative of several compositions exploring an organically derived polytonality. The performer navigates through a set of computer generated harmonics with the help of a light trigger guidance system. The electronic tones are harmonics of the violin part, creating a chordal accompaniment as the violinist moves through the piece. The 'Idle Talk' portion of tonight's version of FEVER is a composition based on acoustic and electronic resonances found in the Mills recording studio. - Mark Trayle

DOUBLE CONCERTO FOR VIOLIN & 'CELLO WITH JAVANESE GAMELAN (1981 - 82) The DOUBLE CONCERTO was written at the request of Ken Goldsmith and Terry King of the Mirecourt Trio in Grinnell, Iowa. It posed several difficult and dangerous problems in the composition but is so composed that any large gamelan may be used. Matters of intonation immediately arose and certain formal problems as well. These, however, have not daunted our distinguished soloists.

It was composed at Mills with parts of it being tried out at U.C.L.A. in the spring of 1981. It is a marriage of East and West not only instrumentally but formally, in that the musical procedures and shapes of the two outer movements are Javanese in style while the central movement is in the form of a European medieval 'estampie', here called 'Stampede', which is accompanied only by the drums of the gamelan, with the sections marked off by the gong. - Lou Harrison -
