saint francis de sales concert series. May 28, 1977. 8:00 p.m. Tibetan Bells and Bhagavan Das. Program Notes. copyright 289w

Of the many who have in the last decade made the journey to India and the Himalayas, and later returned bringing with them sounds of the East, two have commanded particular interest owing to the originality of the sound fusion which they have achieved: The ecstatic vocals of Bhagavan Das, and the sound of Tibetan bells as played by Henry Wolff and Nancy Hennings.

For, though many were fascinated with the possibilities of Eastern instruments and musical usages, these musicians above others have fashioned a unique sound possessing its own integral space.

Each has evolved a distinct audible structure owing evident inspiration to the East: yet each at the same time has pursued those sounds through regions which Eastern musicians perhaps bound more rigidly to traditional forms, have not ventured to exploit. Both Bhagavan Das and Tibetan Bells, each in a different way has attempted to transcend commonly accepted borders of sound, whether of East or West.

It was perhaps inevitable that Bhagavan Das and Tibetan Bells should come to play together.

Bhagavan Das and Tibetan Bells after issuing separate recordings "Ah" and "Tibetan Bells" respectively achieve together yet another musical dimension. From a perspective peculiar to the moment, each would indistinguishably crystalize East and West, past and present, and a radical future, into a single timeless audible space between all space and beyond any.
