MICKEY HART, HENRY WOLFF, & NANCY HENNINGS: Yamantaka (Celestial Harmonies, PO Box 673, Wilton CT 06897) The highlight of this disc is the depth and variety of percussive sounds, many of which were made from instruments designed expressly for this album by Hart (yes, the Grateful Dead drummer).

The general effect is more atmospheric than melodic. Various deep and resounding bells are struck and allowed to reverberate for sometimes several minutes at a time. The "Tibetan gods of the dead" theme seems to be tacked on as a hasty afterthought rather than a "concept" for the album, but it makes pleasant listening all the same. The sound quality as usual for this label, is excellent. --Sally Idasswey
