   TOM ERBE was born in Milwaukee in
   1960 and spent his childhood surrounded by radio engineers and
   marching bands. He studied computer science and music at the
   University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, receiving his BSCS 
in 1984.
   For three years he was the Technical Manager at CARL at the 
University
   of California, San Diego. There he was involved in development 
of a
   electronic violin, a DSP based sound processor and a 
generalized
   computer music workstation. In 1987 Tom became the Technical 
Director
   at the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College. At CCM 
he has
   worked with composers Robert Ashley, David Rosenboom, Larry 
Polansky,
   James Tenney, as computer music and recording engineer. His 
technical
   work at CCM includes writing the program SoundHack, which 
brings
   spectral sound processing to the Macintosh and the design of a 
DSP
   based sound processor for use with the language HMSL. He has 
recently
   developed a 4-channel binaural audio processor for the NASA 
Ames
   Research Center. In 1993, Tom has joined the faculty of the 
California
   Institute of the Arts as Technical Director of the computer 
music
   studios.
