Come to the tunnel prepared to generate energy for positive change. Acting as an individual and taking personal responsibility for your sound and movement, occupy the space, make yourself at home, gather you energy, build your energy, with the goal of pooling your individual energy with the others also working.
At a signal (when I travel through the space ringing a bell) begin to move into a standing circle at the center of the tunnel. Listen for the pitch given for a unison drone (Ab).
Tune to the group by singing an Ab in unison or at an octave. Stay on the Ab on the vowel (oo) for a long time.
Eventually begin changing vowels, still on the Ab. Change vowels very slowly, spending more time between vowels than holding any one particular vowel. (ee-oo) is an excellent series; also (o-ae). Overtones may emerge.
Feel free at any point to listen rather than to vocalize. Either listening or sounding blend your raised energy with the groups energy.
Eventually feel free to sing very short melodic fragments within the harmonic system of Ab, always returning to a consonant frequency or to silence and breath.
Listen for the group decision to end.

NEW DEPARTURES/MUSIC, a Labor Day Weekend Festival opens FRONTIERS OF THE MIND: THE HUMAN DIMENSION
The Maitrey Institute San Francisco presents NEW DEPARTURES/MUSIC, a Labor Day Weekend music festival at Theater Artaud, to open its September workshop series, FRONTIERS OF THE MIND: THE HUMAN DIMENSION. The festival features musicians and composers whose unique styles and innovation have helped expand the boundaries of contemporary music.
Text-sound composer Charles Amirkhanian and visual artist Carol Law lead off the events on Friday evening, August 30th, at 8:30pm, along with the Sonoma County music-theater group Totem.
Saturday features Nubian instrumentalist Hamza El Din at 2:00 pm and nationally renowned San Francisco jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin at 8:00 pm,
followed on Sunday at 10:00am by Nazim Ozel playing his 500-string Semi Civilized Tree, at 2:00 pm by Sioux Indian singer Buddy Red Bow and popular folk singer Kate Wolf, and at 8:00pm by non-traditional composer and performer Pauline Oliveros....

The Sonoma County music-theater group Totem performs a range of vocal and instrumental improvisation, innovative new music and jazz, and fully developed music-theater using techniques from Japanese, Indian and Balinese theater. Totem is composed of actor/vocalist Fred Curchack, trombonist Jon English, bassist Mel Graves, percussionist Tom Dondelinger, and sound artist Richard Waters, inventor of the the waterphone and other unusual musical instruments featured by the group.

Turkish-born Nazim Ozel is a painter, sculptor, musician and creator of the Semi Civilized Tree, a branch from a California Live Oak strung with 500 harp, cello, violin, guitar, banjo, mandolin, saz and oud strings. His performance technique incorporates plucking, bowing, striking, and using auxillary objects on strings tuned to various experimental, Eastern microtonal and Western equal-tempered scales. ...
