Crawling With Tarts: Grand Surface Noise Opera Nr. 3 (Indian Ocean Ship) and Grand Surface Noise Opera Nr. 4 (Drum Totem). Performed live at Mills College in 1993 by Suzanne Dycus-Gendreau and Michael Gendreau, these operas use as many as four turntables simultaneously playing an assortment of institutional records (the sort that usually feature anything but music), and one-of-a-kind transcription discs (the predecessors to Dictaphones), with percussion used as an accent. Attention is focused on the quality of surface noise as a textural binding element. The result is a deep and mesmerizing soundscape.

The Cactus Needle Project: We protest all schemes and plots of anti- democratic conspiracies from the beginnings of the Nazi era to the downing of flight 103 and beyond. We have modularized and processed a great quantity of narrative source material gathered from declassified documents, court transcripts, news stories, history books, investigative journalism, congressional records, printed interviews, rare pamphlets and unpublished manuscripts. These modules are permutated, combined and selected differently for each performance.

Caroliner Rainbow Grace Blocks' "Rings on the Awkward Shadow" double LP is para-musical insanity recorded on a broken wire recorder. Beginning as the sun was just setting was Caroliner Rainbow, who furthered their experiments in mind control and tolerance with a brain-splintering performance. With their black light pinwheels all lit up, their drummer treated everyone to a ballet, complete with glowing underwear and tights shining beneath his skirt. The ballet served to represent the Industrial Revolution and its effects on mankind. After many songs went by and the band showed no signs of exiting or of quieting down, the plug was pulled, after their singer was swinging a cymbal at the audience. (It was tied to a string.) Also, a war of thrown canes had broken out between the audience and the band.

The Residents: Suddenly, lights out and the fab four greet us from a completely dark stage, except for these little flashlight lanterns they were carrying. They slinked around the stage waving the lanterns at the audience before going behind a scrim of burlap (I think) where the equipment was set up. To either side of the Residents setup were two large canvases depicting the mole people in their various stages of life. The mole show workers with Groucho masks would come out and change these pictures from time to time while the Residents played. The first number was "Voices of the Air," the beginning of the Mole trilogy. I'll be damned if the Residents didn't sound ten times better live! I was stunned.
