THE PROGRAM: SIDE A

A1 PSYCLONES "LA FIN DU DEBUT/HOW MANY NIGHTS" [8:20]

The Psyclones' work has appeared on dozens of compilations around the world. Their first album PSYCLONES on the Subterranean label firmly established them as a leading force in the international underground experimental music scene. LA FIN DU DEBUT/HOW MANY NIGHTS will appear on their second album ANOTHER BRIDGE which will be released later this year on Dave Henderson's English label Dead Man's Curve.

Ladd/Frith, P.O.B. 967, Eureka Ca 95502.

A2 LAST CASINO IN NIRVANA "ANOTHER NEW DAY" [1:33]

Last Casino in Nirvana was formed in the summer of 85. It's intentions are to experiment within the areas of pre-recorded music/noise and performance/sound installations. The division was deemed necessary in order to more fully explore the inherent attributes unique to each area.

At this time the method by which the pre-recorded material is made is an additive and reductive one. The end result is similar to a still life in that it is removed from the contingencies of real time or process. This is contrary to the group's intentions within the area of live performance, which attempt to create a visual system in which the process of sound generation is an integral part of the performance.

Derrall Garrison, 560 Lyon St., San Francisco, Ca 94117.

A3 SECRET CHIEFS "I'VE HAD IT WITH HADIT" [3:44]

Our music, our public service announcement, has no rational basis. The only excuse we have is this compulsion to perform, a compulsion we did not invent and for which we disavow responsibility. As inarticulate people we find pure sound peculiarly suited to our requirements. As products of our culture we find the "song" form easy to use. Sound allows us expression without the verbal and intellectual baggage attached to real art. Unjustified, irrational, unsought; there is this feeling.

Secret Chiefs, 537 Jones St. #9766, San Francisco, ca 94102.

A4 HINTON TEMPLAR "WHAT IF IT'S TRUE?" (excerpt) [4:15]

Hinton Templar is a collaborative project featuring Brook Hinton (King's House, Four Track Mind) and S. Templar (White Boy, Medicine Show). Through manipulation of tapes and live electronics, they attempt to create atmospheres which stimulate listeners to form their own aural and visual structures.

Drawing on techniques of sound collage, their music emphasizes the textural and emotional relationships between sources, as opposed to the contextual experiments of many collage artist. The purpose is to create a tension in the listener's mind, forcing interaction with the music.

The Subelecktrick Institute, 475 21st Ave., San Francisco, CA 94121 (415) 386-1461

A5 PHILIP PERKINS TALK/EXIT (For Corazon Aquino) [6:45]

Mr. Perkins began audio tape experiments in 1968, while in high school. Since then he has released 9 albums and cassettes each focusing on a certain aspect of our audio reality. TALK/EXIT is from his latest cassette release THE FLAME OF AMBITION which deals with the "burning" nature of ambition within those who are literally being consumed by it.

Fun Music, 171 South Park, San Francisco Ca 94107.

A6 RHYTHM & NOISE "CHARNAL SCOURGE" [4:21]

Down amidst the scalpels, surgeons hissing legions the concrete machine miasma lingers relentlessly on churning towards the "charnal scourge". This sonic sketch for the upcoming "crisis data transfer" events bears a harbinger for ominous times ahead. For those deceived by R&N's cinematic deviations as only soundtrack foundations for "vaudeo" performances will soon gaze down the chasm at a fresh discord to controversial perceptions -- if the film shuts down the pervading darkness can offer as much to see. Sight unheard. Heard unseen.

R&N, 1071 Van Dyke, San Francisco, CA 94124.

A7 DD DOWNER SCIENCE PROJECT "IF WE SURRENDER, WE DIE" [3:37]

Our ideas will overcome your ideas. We are going to cut the country's whole value system to shreds. It isn't important that there are only 500,000 of us Indians... What is important is that we have a superior way of life. We Indians will show this country how to act human. Someday this country will revise its constitution, its laws, in terms of human beings, instead of property. If Red Power is to be a power in this country it is because it is ideological... What is the ultimate value of a man's life? That is the question. - VineDeloria, Jr., 1971

A8 JOHN DiSTEFANO "CARAA CHAATI" [3:04]

John Di Stefano has been involved in writing and performing experimental music for fifteen years. Trained as a percussionist, he combines electronics and percussion in his music to produce a synthesis of layered polyrhythms and analog/digital electronics. John's music is distributed widely in tape throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia. He records under the name KLANG, and has presented numerous performances of his experimental music in the Bay Area.

He is currently involved in writing music for a number of productions, including a piece directed by Ron Davis, founder of the San Francisco Mime Troupe, and will be working in Summer 1986 with THE RESIDENTS in a production to premiere at Theater Artaud. He is a member of the San Francisco-based performance group ELBOWS AKIMBO, and is currently Artistic Director of THE LAB, an experimental art space in San Francisco, where he is presently curating a sound artist series.

John comments on his music; "One of the basic reasons that I feature rhythm so prominently in my music is that if you can fuck to it, I feel people will enjoy it instinctively."

P.O.B. 15242, San Francisco, CA 94115.

A9 GOLDEN SECTION "DREAMTIME#2" (EXCERPT) [6:10]

This is the second realization of a continuing series of environmental text-sound compositions, based upon a translated reading of "The Circular Ruins", a short story by Jorge Luis Borges. The text itself is rendered unintelligible by the various forms of vocal processing used. The central theme of the story, however; the idea of dreaming objects and beings into existence, is a concept which the piece attempts to provide a vehicle for.

The use of delayed repetitions, the particularities of the reading voice, combine to create a state of waking sleep; a state in which I have been able to intuit, and at times bring forth into my normal waking state, further creative ideas, which are the seeds and remnants of another consciousness, another existence.

-G. Richard Weisberg c/o S.S.D., 1838 48th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94122.

B2 THOM IWATSUBO "EARTH INFERNO (a) THE BOOK OF PLEASURE" [5:30}

The mind is now the belly of the sexuality. Thus I suggest to the Self -- love and its own temptation to excess. Verily, greater courage hath none than to satisfy the unexpected desire by self-pleasure. For this reason, that when the desire again reacts, to operate in the ego, the suffering shall be ecstatic. -Austin Osman Spare

EARTH INFERNO: (a) The Book Of Pleasure is the recorded soundtrack of the first in a series of performance/rituals based upon the writings of Austin Osman Spare. The work was conceived by THOM IWATSUBO and assistance was provided by Linda Lamme, Bliss Blast, Denise Ondayko and Tim O'Neill. The second performance in the series, entitled (b) Suck, will include Spare's theories of automatic drawing performed in a "live" venue.

P.O. Box 881974, San Francisco, CA 94188-1974.

B3 EXPERIMENTAL INDUSTRIES "THE OPENING AND CLOSING OF THE VEIL" [5:03]

Ex.-I embodies the pragmatic construction of a partially incarnate intelligence force. It forms a vector of matrices through which an indeterminate number of directed systems are communicating focus. These are creating and transmitting the symbolic formula which IS.

Vortexes transmuting and recreating, breeding with other similar technological constructions on points of angular coherence by experimentally cohesive spirals. Into the dimensional expansion of existence to return again to this point in space/time. To your position in the formula of reality. Aumgn. Heh.

B4 CONSTERNATION OF PAIN "T.O.P.Y. FUCK OFF 1" [5:07]

At this point Consternation of Pain is a group of four people; Kevin McKereghan, Kalonica McQuesten, David Gardner and Paul Brown. Previous incarnations have done different types of work but it has all had the same ambiance.

This recording was produced in the Electronic Music Lab at San Francisco State. The pieces were built up over time, as opposed to our live shows which are spontaneous improvised. The use of overdubbing allowed us the luxury of hind-sight and breaks up the continuity of the performance.

To a degree there is an unconscious tendency to lose ourselves in the sounds we are making, this is made up for by a strong link between the players.

But it is better for you to listen and for us to shut up.

c/o H.O.M.F.B., 219 Moraga St., San Francisco, CA 94122.

B5 THESSALONIANS "FLAME ONE (LEADING THE PACK)" [6:58]

"The Concentration of Light Prior to Spontaneous Human Combustion (Veritas)"

In the final analysis all life is the sum total of charge and discharge. These two opposing forces formulate a dialectical synthesis resembling chaos and by a systems analysis is simply a true force that randomly constructs coherent motile structures.

"The Artist As a Vessel of Containment"

The vessel utilizes this charge/discharge function in a impressionist/expressionist state of being. The act of containment is delegated to a grid structure which carries along its pathways the atmospherics of intuitive knowledge. In the delicate balance of this system a metalanguage is born; prearranged mental structures are dismissed... the grid becomes antennae (hypersensitive receptors). In the swirl of chaos the spark of improvisation ignites the ether. Flame one.

"The Grid Loses Importance"

In more rarified atmospheres the grid itself is deintensified whereby the state of being gains control. Priority as a signifier of sequence. Concentration as a Reichian concept of health. S.H.C. as the discharge of an organism. Veritas is the sum of the equation.

B6 BREATHER "SUBWAY" [5:17]

"Breaking glass, falling pipes, and bouncing ball bearings recall the rhythms used by such notables as German industrial band, Einstruzende Neubauten, and San Francisco performance artist and musician Z'ev. But BREATHER surrounds these rhythms with an almost Eno-esque synth sounds and calm vocals to create a more subtle, emotion laden product." -ARTCOM

BREATHER is an experimental group with strong leanings towards performance art. Having existed in an embryonic stage for over three years, BREATHER came to life early in 1984, releasing their "Loves and Disloves" album and reaping very positive responses from both college radio stations and progressive media. BREATHER consists of Robert Bolman aka Bliss Blast, Thom Iwatsubo, and Linda Lamme.

POB 881974, SF CA 94188-1974

B7 BOYD RICE "BLOOD FLAME" [12:06]

"Nothing is easier to admit in words than the truth of the universal struggle for life, or more difficult than constantly to bear this conclusion in mind. We behold the face of nature bright with gladness, we do not see or we forget, that the birds which are idly singing around us mostly live on insects or seeds, and are thus constantly destroying life; or we forget how largely these songsters, or their eggs, or their nestlings are destroyed by birds and beasts of prey..." --Charles Darwin, Origin of the Species

"History proves that man is a beast of prey. The beast of prey conquers countries, founds great realms by the subjugation of other subjugators, forms states and organizes civilizations in order to enjoy his booty in peace... Attack and defense, suffering and struggle, victory and defeat, domination and servitude, all sealed with blood; this is the entire history of the human race..." --Richard Wagner

"War is eternal, war is universal. There is no beginning and there is no peace. War is life. Any struggle is war. War is the origin of all things. Let us go back to primitive life, the life of savages. What is war but cunning, deception, attack and suprise? People have always killed when they could not achieve their aims in other ways. Merchants, robbers, warriors -- at one time all these were one. One creature drinks the blood of another. The death of one nourishes the another." --Adolph Hitler
