Habitat Center presents MULTIPLE SYNCHRONISIMS! A six projector Performance featuring projection by Multi-Image Artist Chuck Thurston and live electronic music by composer/performers: Chris Brown, Tom Nunn and Edward Tywoniak.
Chuck Thurston became involved with visual media as a painter but has since been exploring the use of multi-projections as a means of layering and juxtaposing imagery. The availability of micro processor - controllers allows him to make close synchronizations of visuals with sound. He currently teaches a course in multi-image production at San Francisco City College. Chris Brown is a composer and pianist, who has recently been constructing his own amplified acoustic instruments which he performs through electronic circuity. He has collaborated for several years with Tom Nunn also a composer and instrument builder. Together their work has been shown as part of the New Music America Festival and the San Francisco 'Art in the Park'. Edward Tywoniak, a SF native is a multi-instrumentalist playing electronic keyboard, guitar, sitar and percussion. He currently studies electronic music at Mills College and is the director of KSMC-FM and of the educational communications services at St. Mary's College.

A program of New Music will be presented by THE ARCH ENSEMBLE Wednesday, January 9 at 8:00 PM at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre. Robert Hughes will conduct the evening's program and Tom Buckner is baritone soloist for two of the pieces. The program will include four works by living composers, commissioned by The Ensemble and written by Robert Erickson, Robert Ashley, Roscoe Mitchell, and Toshi Ichiyanagi.
The Arch Ensemble was founded in 1977 by its two artistic directors, Tom Buckner and Robert Hughes. The Ensemble is recognized internationally for its performance of works by living composers. Comprised of sixteen core members, this Ensemble presents concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area, other areas of Northern California and has toured New York City, Germany, Italy and Austria.
Conductor Robert Hughes, also Music Director of The Arch Ensemble, has been interested in New Music and has conducted many world premieres, including the first performance of Ezra Pound's opera Le Testament in 1971 with the Western Opera Theater of the San Francisco Opera, and, in 1983, the world premiere of Pound's second opera Cavalcanti with The Arch Ensemble in San Francisco. In addition to directing the Arch Ensemble, his conducting activities have included guest appearances with the Oakland Symphony, San Francisco Ballet, the Cabrillo Music Festival, as well as orchestras from Alaska to Southern California, and in Italy and Switzerland. In 1980, he received the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Award for Adventuresome Programming of Contemporary Music.
Tom Buckner has received critical acclaim for his performances of a wide range of contemporary repertoire, from the world of established European composers such as Luigi Dallapiccola and Luciano Berio, to premieres by young American composers. In 1967, Buckner formed a duo with lutenist Joseph Bacon, with whom he continues to perform and record Renaissance lute songs. He has also been active in improvised music with the Ghost Opera Company of San Francisco, the Denny Zeitlin Trio, and most recently, the trio SPACE with multi-instrumentalist composers Roscoe Mitchell and Gerald Oshita, with whom he has appeared in major festivals and concert series throughout the U.S. and Europe. In 1972, Mr. Buckner founded 1750 Arch Concerts in Berkeley. In 1973, he began 1750 Arch Records, which has gained world-wide recognition for its recordings of contemporary music.

"Than Particle is a music for acoustical and electronic percussion. The acoustical component is performed by a percussion virtuoso; the electronic component is achieved, typically, by computer synthesis. Than particles are short-lived surrogate phenomena, allegorically analogous to a 14th-century head-bashing game that involved, typically, facial laceration and rampant wagering. -- Gordon Mumma
CHRIS BROWN San Francisco based composer Chris Brown is also a pianist and instrument builder. Since 1978 he has been involved in the construction of electroacoustic instruments for live performance. The most recent of these is a computer controlled analog signal processor, designed to use automated electronics as a structural principle in both fully composed and improvised music. Part of his piece "Alternating Currents" will appear as part of the Cold Blue Anthology (Two).
"Iceberg was written for William Winant and will be performed for the first time at NMA '85. The percussion sonorities used are crystalline and brittle, being restricted in pitch to the two top octaves of the piano. The electronic sounds are transformations of the percussion, and the percussionist directs the pacing and control of the effects through the computer. A linear frequency shift is used to gradually modulate the live sound downward, along with a digital delay which recirculates it. describing a kind of underwater geography to the percussion. A pitch follower is used to feed information from the bowed crotales to the computer, which then 'harmonizes' the glockenspiel with the pitch shifter. The percussionist plays in time with the automated switching of effects, starting simply then playing more complex and syncopated patterns against it." -- Chris Brown
JIM POMEROY Jim Pomeroy, a multi-disciplinary artists living in San Francisco, experiments in performance, installation, and photography. His work often merges anachronistic technology with modern media (like amplifying music boxes in "Fear Elites"), frequently incorporating satirical tracts in burlesque presentations (as in the 3-D bubblegum cards, "Apollo Jest"). Notwithstanding, he cites Spike Jones, Ernie Kovacs, Mr. Wizard, Bertolt Brecht, and Heloise as important personal influences. His hobbies include collecting eccentric musical transcriptions and Rushmoriana.
